You may have heard of a little strategy called having an
‘accountability partner’. It’s a pretty simple concept but it’s
power should not to be underestimated. Basically this is where you
have an informal partnership with someone who you trust to keep you
on track with your goals in your business.
Here are a few reasons having an accountability partnership is a
1. This system could be just the edge you need to finally get
things done in your business and move things forward. So often we
find ourselves stuck in indecision and procrastination. This could
be the end of it.
2. Working online can be lonely at times so it makes sense to have
someone you can share ideas with or brainstorm. Just having access
to a second opinion can be invaluable as well.
3. Stay accountable. Hence the name, the whole idea is to be held
responsible for your output. A great idea is to share your 3
biggest tasks for the week with them and then have them stay on
your case to get it done.
4. To share. Sometimes we just need to tell someone about the great
work we did such as land a big client, hit an income goal or finish
a big project. Celebration is an important part of success and we
need to make the most of our wins.
5. Someone to open up to. Business can be tough and our demons can
sometimes seem too much to handle. It can be the best feeling in
the world to have someone who can sympathize and understand exactly
what we’re going through or lend advice.
6. Pure productivity. It’s been shown that people who are held 100%
accountable for their actions get more done in a week than those
who don’t. So why not take advantage of this psychological
phenomena and get more stuff done. More willpower is unlikely to
make much of a difference.
It works especially well if you have something really important to
complete and to a very specific deadline (you do work to deadlines
don’t you?) A tip to take advantage of this is to give your
accountability partner $100 and if you cannot prove to him or her
that you are finished on time, they keep the $100. It works on the
principle that it’s not easy to stay motivated for ourselves
(emotions get in the way) but it is easy to be motivated if others
are holding us responsible.
The best way to find a great accountability partner is to choose
someone who you get along with first of all. This is very important
as you will spend a lot of time chatting and discussing things. It
will also help if the person is in the same industry as you are so
there is some common ground.
This is one of those business strategies that is so powerful, it is
almost non-negotiable. You will get more done than you ever have in
your life, you’ll make more money, have less stress and feel like
you have real support in your business.
