Google’s clamping down on paid link networks is not exactly new
information. The fact that Build My Rank and Authority Link Network
have both closed their doors does however signify the end of an era
and it’s a sign that everyone getting traffic from Google needs to
pay attention. Gone are the days where a subscription to one or two
of these link networks was all that was needed to get decent
rankings and all the traffic and money that came with it. We should
use this as a wake up call for all of us involved in SEO to become
more mature, professional and focused on the long term.
For those of us that do, the rewards will be great.
The thing is many players have simply dropped out. Those lawyers,
real estate agents and veterinarians that started offering SEO
services while times were good and rode the wave of easy rankings
were simply not prepared for what was to come. They didn’t have a
good grasp of what SEO was really about over any meaningful length
of time and they’re most likely running back to their days jobs
with their tail between their legs. The same goes for all these
Amazon affiliates with their crappy lawnmower review sites and the
Clickbank slingers and their weight loss junk.
This leaves the field wide open for you and me.
SEO like most things in life is about sticking to the fundamentals,
having a long-term vision and executing a plan. Those of us that
can pull this off and keep it up will reap all the rewards while
the short-term thinking loophole-exploiters are thrown around like
rags in the wind. Don’t be one of these guys. So, going forward
there are a few steps to take, especially if you were one of those
hit by the infamous Panda updates. Here they are:
Step 1. Upgrade Content:
Go through every page on your site and make them all as good as
possible. Fix spelling and grammar errors, combine two weaker pages
into one great one, add video where necessary (shoot some if you
have to) and update older content with new information.
Step 2. Speed It Up:
Site speed not only improves conversions like crazy, they are
actually a real ranking factor that helps immensely. Sure, it’s not
the easiest thing in the world to improve but that means no one
else is doing it either. Optimize your graphics, get new hosting
and streamline your design.
Step 3. Analytics Boost:
Start taking more notice of your bounce rate, average time on site
and average pages per visit. Not only will improving these make you
more money immediately, but they will also improve your rankings.
This can be done with better content, an improved design, more
graphics or interactive elements.
Step 4. Great Links:
Now’s the time to put that guest posting campaign into effect, add
some truly link-worthy content to your site, participate in
relevant forums, comment on popular blogs and basically just
networking like crazy. Not only will this result in great links,
but you’ll get some extra traffic too, minimizing your reliance on
Google just a bit, and that is always a good idea.
Now is the time to shine.
